A total transformation from a worn out and dated flat in a prime location, into a splendid dream-come-true seaside home. Involving a full renovation and interior design, Justine Knox took the client’s three pet wishes – an area to view the sunset in the garden, a daybed for garden siestas and a hot tub – and worked them into this full indoor and outdoor re-designed and refurbished property.

This is a ground floor flat with a private garden, situated right by the beach of Puerto Portals, an exclusive area along the SW coast of Mallorca. The full overhaul of this holiday property involved interior furnishings, rewiring, replumbing, refitting kitchen and bathrooms, new windows and floors as well as a total revamp of the garden area.

Above, floating ceilings, with recessed lights and curtain tracks were fitted; below, natural stone flooring was laid throughout the property.

The open-plan living area was arranged to make the most of the view. A powder blue sofa with blue-toned Missoni throw cushions and matching swivel armchair (to allow for the view to be enjoyed from any angle) were arranged around modern glass and chrome round coffee tables on a leather patchwork rug. Justine opted for a round glass dining table so as to minimise any obstruction of the view beyond, placing a large mirror on the side wall to reflect the outdoor scenery from the window opposite.

The kitchen is white, open and well-lit, with white lacquered units and elegant wood panelling around the fridge and slim profile ceramic counter tops.

The master bedroom is a serene composition of navy and white, Bespoke floating side tables and wall lamps help deal with minimal space and the statement artwork by Cobra Art above the king size bed echoes the general colour scheme. The master bathroom features his and hers shower cubicles and a striking bespoke Alex Turco panel in blue tones.

A coral colour scheme was chosen for the guest bedroom, with colourful ikat-style wallpaper, coral motif cushions and white lacquered furniture. The guest bathroom features eye-catching tiles in an elegant black, bronze and cream barcode design.

The children’s room has a distinct nautical feel, with blue feature wall, starfish patterned cushions, a boat-shaped shelving unit in the corner, a lighthouse night lamp and life preserver rings hanging from the wall.

The flat had an underfloor storage area that Justine cleverly transformed into a desirable wine-cellar, with stone clad floors and walls, bespoke wine shelving and a counter. Its previous access via a trap door in the sitting room was replaced with glass, and a new door was cut for access straight from the garden. Outside the wall along the beach side was replaced with glass panels for best sea views, and bamboo screening was placed all around for maximum privacy. The garden was landscaped, a lawn was laid and a gate was fitted for independent access from the street. A wooden pergola provided a shaded outdoor dining area and, as per the client’s instructions, comfortable all-weather furniture was placed in the best corner to watch the setting sun, a chunky wicker dining set was chosen for the outdoor deck and the Jacuzzi was installed under the palm fronds.
