This project involved the decorating and furnishing of an apartment situated in the luxury holiday community of Gran Folies, in Cala Llamp (SW Mallorca). This development is comprised of Mediterranean townhouse buildings rising up the hillside with balconies and terraces overlooking the cove below. The façades of the buildings are painted in bright colours combined with Mallorcan sandstone, and the exteriors and interiors are finished to a very high spec. Salient features in the apartment in question are its natural stone floors, wood panelled doors and structural arches.
Justine Knox’s signature style is one where colour plays a central role. She is best known for her bold and multi-coloured décor, cleverly and often daringly combined to create spaces that are cheerful, contemporary and ultra-chic. Having said that, Justine loves to work with different styles: nothing like the challenge of getting to know her clients and what they want. Her ultimate goal is to create homes that perfectly reflect the personality of the people living in them.
In this case, the owner asked for a calm and neutral décor with a classical feel. Justine Knox’s interpretation of their request consisted of a blend of natural and contemporary materials. Glass and chrome in ceiling lamps, coffee table and accessories in the sitting room space; wicker chairs around a solid lime wood table in the dining area. Cushions in solid aqua and sand tones and zig-zag Missoni patterns on a beige L-shaped sofa echo the tones of the seascape on the wall above. The ice-blue rug, the classical marble surround of the fireplace and white framed mirror and built-in shelving work together to conjure up a space that is sophisticated, elegant and cool.
The master bedroom continues with the soft aqua and sand hues. The headboard and bedlinen in sand and white blend seamlessly against the backdrop of Georgian style striped wallpaper in muted gold and ecru. The soft aqua is present in the Louis XV side tables and chest of drawers, with a Louis XV chair placed in a corner by the heavy silk embroidered curtains. The general feel is one of understated opulence. The same theme has been carried through to the guest bedroom, slightly smaller than the master; the prevailing palette is one of ivories and creams, furnished in the same style and opting for a back wall painted in a solid colour to maximise sense of space.
The teenage daughter’s bedroom breaks away from the muted colour scheme of the rest of the home, with a happy and chic décor in a much younger style. The multi-coloured wallpaper on the back wall contains all the colours that are then incorporated into the fabric custom-made lampshades, the throw and the cushions, also by Missoni, along with highly contemporary bed pillows in gold snakeskin fabric. The Missoni curtains are in a range of soft pastels, framing beautiful sheer voile curtains in the classical zig-zag pattern of the brand in the same range of colours. The furniture is painted in white lacquer with rounded edges and the rug and stool in white fur complete this fun and very snazzy bedroom.
