Having been let down by the original contractor, Justine Knox was called in to finish the renovation of this ground floor holiday apartment in Cala Fornells, in SW Mallorca. This involved fitting a brand new Kitchen, flooring, electrics, plumbing, air conditioning and heating and audio-visuals, and the high standard of the work completed led to Justine Knox being asked to put her unique stamp on the décor of this property. The aim was to create a surprising blend of grown-up fun and sophistication for family use.

Seeking to maximise space, the open plan area was extended to encompass part of the back garden, now housing the high-tech kitchen with double oven and built-in appliances, with its high gloss lacquer and wood units, Italian granite worktops, under-unit lighting and a functional island and breakfast part. As for the colour scheme, Justine was given carte blanche in this regard, and as a hint to test the extent of her clients’ bravery, she decided to make the yellow leather sofa a central feature. This has been blended with teal throughout the home to conjure up an edgy version of the sun & sea tonalities: modern Med with a twist.

Wood-look porcelain tiled flooring stretches across the living area with its bright white and vibrant yellow walls. The teal-yellow palette is alternately picked up on kitchen stools, ornaments, rugs, cushions and artwork. The zesty Christian Lacroix window treatments add and explosion of colour to the lounge area and the feature ceiling lamp in the dining room crowns the contemporary glass and steel table for six.

The bedrooms are a showcase of Justine’s bold use of colour. For the master bedroom she chose an audacious combination of lilac, aqua and sand. A purple velvet headboard and bright purple throw cushions, light cinnamon curtains and rugs, all picked up in the stunning wallpaper with a leaf and flower motif. The twin- bedroom is decorated in an eye-popping bright pink butterfly-themed wallpaper and black & white pillows, creating a liquorice allsorts cheerful and contemporary feel. The single room has a distinct travel theme, complete with world map wallpaper and cushions with a stamped envelope motif.

The rear outdoor terrace has been furnished with a bespoke solid wood table and aluminium seating. The patch of lawn in the front terrace has been fitted out with all-weather cane furniture accessorized with Missoni summer collection cushions in a colourful marine themed print.

The result was so stunning that it was shortlisted for the International Architecture and Design Awards – Europe 2017.
